South Africa v Mexico
For the opening game adidas created an enormous South Africa jersey to celebrate them as hosts, it was 50×50 meters. So I invented the idea of 3 Mexicans who brought with them a tiny jersey as a symbol of good luck. No money for castings meant I found these guys in a bar and convinced them to play the part. They were awesome.
Argentina v Mexico
Mexico qualified to face the mighty Argentina and to continue the story we found these argentine fans in another bar. Their talisman was a little flea which referenced Lionel Messi who is known as ‘La Pulga’ – little flea.
Germany v Spain
Unfortunately through powers beyond my control I couldn’t make the German film that referenced Argentina. Instead I made two films in a day for the semi final between Germany and Spain. We drove to Durban and ended up at a Nigerian crackhouse. We scarpered and found a shit-but-good hotel by the sea. After breakfast the following day we went in to Mission Find-a-Fan. 17 hours we finished these cherry pies.
